Rebar Tying Robot Wins Top Honour at Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions

The 49th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions concluded on 21 April 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland. Among 36 teams from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the rebar tying robot developed by the HKCRC research team received unanimous approval from the jury and was awarded the Special Prize of the Jury — the highest honour at the exhibition.

The rebar tying robot features autonomous identification and positioning, automatic obstacle avoidance, and automatic lane-switching, enabling fully autonomous large-area rebar tying in the centre zone of rebar grids. It ties one node every 5 seconds, with a combined throughput of approximately 500 nodes per hour including maintenance time.
